Fence Lizards Perhaps the most commonly seen and most widely ranged lizard is the fence lizard. These lizards can be basicilly divided into two Catagories: the western fence Lizard( which lives in the western area of the U.S) and the eastern fence lizard(this lizard basically sticks to the east coast). The western fence lizards live fairley long lives. . . as some have lived 10 years. They start out as an egg and hatch at about one half an inch long . At this time in their lives they only eat small creatures, like ants and flys. But as they grow larger they start to eat caterpillers and millipedes. The bottem line is that they will eat any insect that lives under large rocks which is where the baby lizard spends the first part of its life. The baby lizards eyes and ears are open when it is born which helps it to move around. After it crawls out from under the large rock where it spent its first few days, its life basically consists of running, eating and hiding for three weeks. Then it learns to sun and warm its-self,and is out half the day(thanx to its instinks). When the baby lizard gets a bit larger it starts doing its "push ups". Some people think this is a mating ritual, and others think its a warming tecnique. I personally think it is a mating ritual because I have watched captive bred, and wild lizards mate right after doing this ritual, as i like to call it. The baby lizard gets bigger and bigger and soon we (humans) can figure out what sex it is. If it has absolutely no neck blue bloch and very little or no blueness on its stomach,it is a female. You can tell if it is a pregnant female if the back half of its body is bulging with bumps. The males have a blue patch on there neck and two large patches on their stomach witch has earned them the name blue bellies, jeweled swifts, blue bellied skinks, and various other names. The lizards gradually get bigger and began to eat crickets and grass hoppers along with dragon flies(you heard me right they catch dragon flies that are perching on plants,etc...). They grow up , get larger, and their instinks tell them to mate. I have witnessed this several times. . . . If you want to know if you may be incountering this it is when one lizard is lying on its back and the other is on top of it right side up. About a month and a half afterwards, the female lizard, lays up to fifteen soft shelled eggs in a damp, cool crevice. . . three weeks later the baby fence lizards are born and restart the cycle, maybe even in your back yard. If you have any questions at all about having one of these great lizards as a pet, email me at [email protected] . I have nine of them, have breeded them and would be glad to answer any questions or give some advice. | |||||||||||||||||
